Assignment for Tuesday, 8/20

I understand that our textbook isn't here yet, so we're going to dive right into a village in India. Watch the following two videos (hang in there with the young woman's accent as well as you can), and then respond to this blog in the Comments by 1) listing two interesting things you learned, and 2) asking two questions you'd like to know about Hinduism.

NOTE: When you sign on to the blog, use your initials and year of graduating, ie. jpg72. It's against school policy to use full student names on internet.

I learned that during festival times, they share all the food they prepare with their neighbors to create and keep a very close bond with them. Also, that families always eat together in a group and never eat alone. Another thing I learned is the belief that one's past actions (carma) determine thier quality in the next life. 2 questions I have are what was that salt looking stuff they were putting outside their door to welcome gods into their homes? And What exactly does the red dot on the forehead of hindu women mean?

What I have learned from watching these videos is that the days Tuesday and Friday are important because these are the days that people go to the temples and pray to the Gods. Also I thought it was interesting that what a person does in their present life determins how they will be reborn in their next life. Two questions that I have are: what do the flashing lights signify in the prayer room, and why are river such an important part of Hinduism?

I found it interesting that Hinduism is a polytheistic religion. I was under the impression that it was a monotheistic religion like Judaism or Islam. Also, it is interesting that Hindus believe that the gods enter their houses every day, and the patterns drawn with the white powder pleases them. However, I have two questions. First of all, do Hindus have specific prayers from prayer books that they are required to pray, or do they have more freedom in their prayer like Christians? Secondly, do Hindus have a sabbath, a day set aside for the corporate worship of their gods?

During the video, I learned that it is a belief in Hinduism that people should remain in their social groups or “caste.” I want to know why that is? I also learned that it is a sin to kill animals in their religion, and that they have a room devoted to prayer in their homes. I also want to know how many gods and goddesses there are in Hinduism.

I learned that in Hinduism there is one main god who all the other gods are derived from, and that they consider the kitchen is a sacred place.
Why does the girl take off her shoes when she enters the temple? Also, is what they wear determined by their religion, and what do the red dots on their foreheads mean?

I learned that Hinduism is considered the oldest religion in the world today (starting 4000 years ago in India). I also learned that the religion has evolved over the years and that they have made new texts to go with the religious changes. I do want to know if they always have to eat as a family and why do they typically go to the temple on Tuesdays and Fridays is there a reason behind that?

I found out that the woman drew the white image on the floor because they believe in that when the God passes by and sees this He will be happy and so will bring happiness to the people, and alsothe Hindunism gives the directions for people about remaining in their social group or caste, and it states the duties or "dharms" everyone should fulfill.
I wonder why the Hindunism could have such long existence and why there are so many gods and goddess in Hindunism.

I found out that Hinduism is one of the longest living religions. I found that pretty cool. I also learned that the kitchen is the most sacred place in the house? Why would that be? What is so important about it?

I learned that all of the Hindu's god's and goddesses were created from Brahman, which is the supreme god. I also learned that Friday's are the special prayer day, and they go to the temples to pray on Friday's and Tuesdays. The woman in the first film said that they all bathed before they went into the temples, is it required to bathe before entering a temple or is it just a cultural thing to do that? Why do they only share food with the neighbors but not dresses or ornaments?

I learned that the religion really brings the people closer, and that Hinduism is more than a religion - it's a way of life. Hinduism plays a much bigger role in daily live than Christianity does in the lives of most people in the US.

Does the jewelry signify anything?
How did the tradition of the powder stuff that welcomes Gods into the houses begin?

I learned that Hinduism is known as the oldest religion as of today, and that it originated in India over 4,000 years ago. I learned that all the Gods and Goddesses are manifested from one, Brahman. I thought it was cool that the ones who want to study go to Saraswati, the Goddess of Education, to pray they passed the exam. They do this by writing their register number beneath Saraswati.

I learned that in the religion of Hinduism the people are more of a communinty than in mostly other religions in the world. They share everything and eat all together, which shows that they are really close to each other. Another important thing I learned is that the Hindus go and pray on Tuesdays and Fridays. One thing I would really like to know though is how many goods there are in Hinduism, because i am not quite sure about that?

I love that the students write their registration numbers on the temple after an exam to pray for good grades. I was also interested by their practice of sharing their food with their neighbors to bring everyone closer. I am wondering what the reasoning is behind the religion instructing its followers to stay within their own social classes and how often the symbol outside their homes is painted.

i learned that fridays and tuesdays are special holy days in the hindu religion, and i would like to know what kinds of prayers they do on those days and why. i also learned that ancient practices of Vedism and Brahmanism meshed together to form Hinduism.
i would like to know more about the different gods and goddesses of Hinduism and i would also like to learn more about their traditions and holidays.

From the videos, I learned/found it very interesting how many rituals the Hindi people have. I thought it was cool how they will go after an examination and write their exam number on a wall around the god for education in hopes it would help them to pass. I also found it interesting how they all ate on the floor, and all together. I really like how they eat as a family, and with the neighbors.

To clarify, did Hindu come from many different little religions that all came together?

Was the place she walked into downtown (with all the lights and statues) a temple?

I have learned that the elephant is an important animal to their religion and is commonly seen adorning hindu items. The next thing I noticed more than i learned was that all of the gods and goddesses are so intricatley adorned. Each figure is draped in many layers of bright clothing. Some questions i had that arose from the video are 1.) What is the significance of the red dot that is worn by all of the women? and 2.) Since the video said that all the gods and goddesses are manifestations of one supreme being, Braham, is that somewhat similar to the idea of the holy trinity (the father, son, holy spirit)? I know that because they represent different Gods it isnt exactly the same, but is it a similar idea?

I learned that Hinduism is the oldest religion still being practiced today. I also didn't know that it along with the gods is comprised of many ideas from different religions. My first question is how does the architecture relate to the religion, if at all? Second, Do their school days revolve around the Tuesday/Friday holy days?

While watching the videos, I found it interesting that the Hindus believe that in order to make the gods or goddesses happy when entering a home, they have to sprinkle rangola in beautiful designs. Also, I found it interesting that as Hinduism grew, it gathered many different ideas from other religions. Why does the young girl walk around the table adorned with different gods and goddesses multiple times? Also, what does the girl reach down to touch before entering the temple, and why does she do this?

From the 9 minute video, i learned that the kitchen is a sacred place for something, i couldn't understand what she said it was sacred for, and Loud Ganasha must be prayed to for anything dealing with work. How has the caste system of hinduism been affected by Western Idealism? During the celebration of the holy days, do the castes very intermingal?

I found it interesting that Hinduism is the oldest religion, but more fascinating that the oldest religion is only 4,000 years old. I also enjoyed learning that they have an education god. I obviously noticed that the family prayed almost constantly. Are most Hindu families that dedicated to there religion? I was also curios about what countries tend to have a high percentage of Hindu's. India is a highly populated country and it doesn't seem as if there could be many other places were the religion was popular if it contains 700 million people.

I was wondering whether they only think and talk about religion all the time or if it just seamed that way because there was a camera. I learned that they try to have good karma so they will have a happy next life. Why does she refer to god as god (singular) instead of gods when she worships more than one god. How was it decided what each god would look like and what they would be the god of?

One fact I found extremely interesting is that Hinduism is the oldest religion. I was also amazed at the discipline and sacrfice the Hindu people were willing to make to uphold their relgion. What is the second oldest religion? How much influence did Hinduism have on it?

While watching the videos, I learned that Fridays and Tuesdays are famous days for prayer. However, I am wondering why these two days are famous days for prayer. I also learned that followers of Hinduism offer food as a sacrifice to the gods, which led me to my next question - what happens to the food afterward?

I thought the God of education was interesting; also, I had no idea about making the markings in front of your doorstep. I would ask: why is the cow considered especially holy (If that's not a myth), and if there was a single man that founded Hinduism or if it was a collection of ideas.

I learned from the videos that there are different idols in Hinduism and that there isn't one that is right or wrong to use. Some people pray to many of these different idols all at the same time. It doesn't matter what the idol is, it's only what it stands for. Also, I learned that when people are doing their rituals there are many different step and stages that the ritual consists of. It was to be a very tough thing to learn how to do these different rituals at a young age.

I was amazed that the power of religion is huge. And God is so powerful in that society. Everyone sharing food and believe in next life. I wondered how this religion got so much power, and if people see other nations which are free about the religion, how would they feel.
